community. Be sure to sign up for the Nukeleated

Here is a small clip from Nukeleated entitled "Duke
speaks his mind":
Duke
Nukem. Will his witty character be the same as before?
Well apparently so. Duke will be the same as in Duke
Nukem 3D, meaning he will speak his mind on his own at
specific events like before weather it be putting the
smack dabon a monster's ass, picks up on chicks,
singing karaoke, or kicking ass & chewing bubble
gum when your all out of gum. Only this time some of
his chats will be a little longer due to the story
being more involved than before.

Forum Goodness 4/11/00 18:36 PST | Duke Nukem
Forever News | Andy
Yarger The 3D Realms DNF Forum is
attracting a lot of employee attention once again.
Throughout last night and all day today, both Chris
Hargrove and George Broussard have posted a few times
each. Here is a few snips of what's going on:
Chris Hargrove: As for blowing off limbs, that
computation can work on individual bones themselves
(which every character has more than 40 of), including
individual fingers. Whether we decide gameplay-wise to
do limb removal at the bone or region level depends on
what plays better, but if we wanted to blow off an
individual finger we could; the code would support
stuff like that...
George
Broussard: Duke will be the same old Duke you either
loved or hated. He will talk on his own in the game at
specific events. This time around he will have some
longer conversations as well due to the story being
more involved, so his character has a chance to grow a
bit.
But he's still the alien killin', ass
kickin', politically incorrect action hero you've all
come to know...
Check out threads 1,
2,
3,
4
or 5
for some reading material to keep you busy... ;) Thanks

Broussard in DNF
Forums 4/9/00
15:06 PST | Duke Nukem Forever News | Andy
Yarger George Broussard made an appearance
in the 3D
Realms DNF Forums responding in a set of threads
pertaining to locational damage and the possibility of
bringing back some Duke Nukem 3D levels (which would be
kind of interesting DM'ing in favorite Duke3D maps in
DNF). Here is a tidbit:
>>How Many Points of locational
Damage will DN4 have? Y'know what body parts are
damaged when you shoot them?
It works
based off bones. Basically there are something like 15
places on the front and back of a model that the
character can react to when hit. Obvious stuff like
Head, Upper Chest, Lower chest, Groin, shoulders,
upper arms, lower arms, hands etc..
and here
for the threads. Thanks ADecay.

results: 49.3% voted Yes, gimme the game
already! 25.9% chose Yep but I'll wait some
more 13% were cool and voted that 3DRealms
should take their time 7.6% said I like to
wait for good things (misguided fools) and 4.2%
don't know what DNF is. Odd. . .

Scott Miller
interview 4/8/00 16:15 PST | Community News | merlin The
folks over at Hypothermia
have an exclusive interview with 3D Realms Scott Miller.
The interview asks Scott a few personal questions as
well as a few questions on work related topics. Below is
alittle clip of the interview:
How'd you get started in the Game Making Game and/or
who was your inspiration?
Back
when I began developing games, in 1975 on a Wang 2000
PC, my only inspiration was Creative Computing, the
top magazine of its day for computer hobbyist. The
first arcade revolution in the late 70’s through early
80’s also provided further inspiration and training,
which I applied to games I wrote on my Commodore PET,
C-64, Amiga 1000 and IBM PC 8088 with 4-color CGA
graphics. I guess my early heroes were in the arcade
industry, where the true cutting-edge and innovative
games appeared (much more true then than nowadays),
but sadly I cannot remember their names anymore,
except for Jarvis, who made Defender and Robotron.

Chris Hargrove on
DNF 4/6/00
13:02 PST | Duke Nukem Forever News | merlin Chris
Hargrove has posted some info on "How Many Points of
locational Damage will DN4 have?" at the official 3D Realms
forums. Below is alittle clip from Chris's post:
The
pain response depends on the bone being hit; currently
we use different animations depending on the region,
dynamic recoiling doesn't often look as good as one
might think it would (although we may try some small
combination of dynamic and predetermined pain
animation if we eventually feel it's necessary. Never
dynamic-only though, since that usually looks like
crap).

Unreal Center Interviews John
Anderson 4/5/00 13:57 PST | Duke Nukem Forever News | Andy
Yarger Unreal Center
has an interview
up with 3D Realms Duke Nukem Forever mapper, John
Anderson focusing primarily on DNF. Here is a piece of
the action:
Could you give us a development update on
Duke Nukem Forever? What are you guys working on?
How's everything progressing? You know we’re
keeping a pretty tight lid on the details, the reason
for this is because we don’t want to spoil the
surprise and thrill of that first play experience. We
want the game to speak for itself. Rest assured every
person on the team wants to make the best FPS ever,
and we’ve played them all and understand what that
means. Duke has got a lot of very loyal fans and we
don’t intend to disappoint anyone, we are a bunch of
hardcore gaming perfectionists working very hard on
finishing up this game
As
always, read the full interview in all its glory, here.
Thanks Dukeworld.

George and Charlie
speak! 4/2/00
3:46 PST | Duke Nukem Forever News | razertooth Charlie
Wiederhold talked in this
thread about the system specs that DNF will most
likely need:
All
of the level designers are running on at most
P3-450's, Voodoo 3/Voodooo2/TNT2. We have gobs of
memory to help make editing that much easier, but 128
megs should be fine, and we are most likely going to
force it to work on 64. George
Broussard made comments in this
thread about interactivity in Duke3D and what will
be in DNF.
>>All of the interactive features listed
didn't have much effect on game play - listen to the
phone noise (wow), blow up a toilet (wow), duke speaks
to girls (WOW)...
Yes they do. They immerse the
player in the world, making it more real and creating
"suspension of disbelief".
>>Just because
all other games were lacking in interactiveness does
not mean duke3d was wonderfully
interactive.
Sure it does. If the player thinks
"Hey I wonder if I can interact with X", and they do
and it reacts, that's interaction. You can debate
about level all you want, but Duke 3D rewarded people
for manipulating the world.
And DNF will allow
you to do so on a level you cannot even imagine
yet.
George Broussard, 3D Realms
ThanksADecay from
Unreal
Universe.

DukeEd Editing
Docs? 3/30/00
14:22 PST | Duke Nukem Forever News | Andy
Yarger Charlie Wiederhold was spotted in
the 3D
Realms DNF Forums. He has confirmed that 3D Realms
will be creating documents for the features they have
added to the original UnrealEd base. The rest is pretty
much the same if you've edited with UnrealEd. If you're
looking to get a head start on maps for DNF, the best
thing you could do is learn UnrealEd. Here it is from
the horse's mouth:
I
don't know how much documentation will come with DNF
right now. We certainly intend to document as much of
the stuff we created ourselves, but until those things
have been written we don't know how much or how
comprehensive they will be. Writing something as we go
is pretty futile as things evolve and change so much
that we would become too wrapped up in making sure the
documentation was up to date. Check
out the entire discussion, here.
Thanks Dukeworld.

10:29 PST | Duke Nukem Forever News | Lucky Charlie
Wiederhold spoke in the offical Duke Nukem Forever
forums over @ 3DRealms and said (deep breath!):
We've released many teaser images, as well as
video of the game in action. Soon there will be another
video (E3) in action. Once the game is complete, there
will a fully playable demo . . . There will be a demo.
There will be more screenshots. There will be a plethora
of information. What hard evidence do you really need
before it's done?

New Poll And
Results 3/26/00 4:14 PST | Community News | Lucky It's
Sunday, so that means our Poll gets updated! This week
we ask the question Are you bored of Duke3D? Go
cast your vote!
The results of last week's poll, What game (if
any) would be bigger than DNF? are in, too: The
majority, 52.4% reckon DNF will be the Daddy this year.
25.9% think TF2 will top DNF. 8.3% think Halo
will be better . . . A disgusting 6.9% think DNF
will suck - that's 6.8% too much in my opinion :)
And finally the extreme minority - 6.6% - thought
Soldier of Fortune would be the best game this year.
Thanks for voting!

RPOV Interviews Mark
Rein 3/17/00
13:30 PST | Duke Nukem Forever News | Andy
Yarger Glen Jackson sends word that RPOV has an interview
with Epic's Mark Rein up on their site. Among Unreal
aspects, some of the topic shifts to Epic's talk of
using the BUILD engine in 1993. Here's a tidbit, find
the full interview here:
stonewall: In 1993 you made a proposal
for the Build engine on behalf of Epic Games. At the
time Epic was releasing pinball games and a year later
research began on Unreal. What were your plans for
Build and how did not getting that engine affect
Epic?
Mark: I'd say we came out way
ahead the way things worked out. With Ken Silverman
(creator of the Build engine) on board we might not
have been as motivated to make our own technology.
Build was good tech and of course Duke Nukem got made
with it, but it wasn't a long-term technology play
like the Unreal Engine. So both Epic and 3DRealms
ended up better off for the way things worked out.
3DRealms produced the monster hit Duke Nukem 3D and,
by complete coincedence, we went on to produce the
engine that they will use for the sequel to it.
