Changed the "Error during Initialization" dialog
to report the specific error
Added view height change for MOF

doesn't drop you to the console during DM server
browsing

connecting to servers
Fixed an issue with spectator mode

spots
Also included in this version is a DLL
from Creative Labs. This emulates EAX2.0 on any card
that supports EAX1.0. This would include SB PCI cards,
Vortex2 cards, and older Sensura based cards. To
install this feature, run the batch file in the SoF
directory called "installeax.bat" He
also makes mention that the existing Raven servers are
using the latest code. So hold onto your hats, folks..
It's coming soon! If you want to take a look at the

Operation Overlord
Mod 4/11/00
19:58 PST | Zool A
new mod called Operation Overlord has joined the SoF
community. The mod is said to be a mix of quake's Team
Fortress with Unreal Tournament's Assault. Heres a
tidbit:
"Operation Overlord is
a Team Based Multiplayer Mod for Soldier of Fortune.
Operation Overlord is intense combat that requires
reliance on team members to carry out jobs they are
assigned to do. It's not capture the flag though, but
mission based play like Assault for Unreal Tournament.
One team Attacks and the other Defends. After one
round, teams are switched, defenders attack, attackers
defend. There is no set time limit, so a beach
invasion may become a stalemate and last for an hour
or so, until the team utilizes the in-game map feature
and the captain places waypoints and mission
objectives for individual members. To enhance the game
we have added classes to the game. You can now choose
from one of the 8 classes, each with special abilities
and weaponry." Sounds awesome! They
are also looking for people willing to help out on the
mod, check it out.

SoF Review @
MaximumPain 4/9/00 19:45 PST | Daravon The
guys over at MaximumPain have
put up an SoF review. Here's a
bit.
SOF is one to not pass
up, if you loved Quake II you will not put Solider of
Fortune down for quite some time! A
score of 9/10 can't be wrong! Go check it out.

|
SoF Review @
Quantum9 4/9/00 17:18 PST | Daravon The
guys over at Quantum9 have also
pumped out a review.
Here...
If and when there is a
sequel made to SoF (see ending), I'm hoping Raven will
take the time to code in some better AI, and maybe (it
wouldn't hurt) throw in a good story. Other than that,
the game really does stand tall. You
can catch the rest, here.

|
SoF Review @ GameSpot
Australia 4/9/00 17:13 PST | Daravon The
folks over at GameSpot
Australia have put up a review.
Here's a bit of it.
Soldier of Fortune is,
for the most part, an intense depiction of the
atmosphere and visceral components of combat. In this
capacity it delivers handsomely, and makes an
exceptional multiplayer game - especially on the
realistic setting, which incorporates a 'fatigue
meter', that limits your aerobic endurance. The cheesy
story, slightly dated graphics engine and lazy
artificial intelligence in the single-player component
put disappointing scratches in this otherwise polished
product. There you have it, kids.
You can go take a look at it, here.

|
What If... 4/9/00 17:06 PST | Daravon SOF.net has
introduced a new column called What If... It's like the
sort of entertainment value you get from reading Top

by using things from SoF such as this week's "What If
John Mullins...". Go here
to check it out!
Thanks goes out to twisted, for
the heads up.

SoF Review @
Bloodshot 4/8/00 21:22 PST | Daravon Cruciform,
over at Bloodshot, has put
up another review
of SoF. Here's a bit.
An option for limited
saves really cranked up the stress level for me in the
harder levels, as hitting quicksave every two minutes
is an old habit for me. Not having unlimited saves in
the configuration I chose to play made for some
extremely tense moments, counting ammo, considering
how many cover areas there were between location A and
B, and whether there was a sniper on the balcony
overhead or a dog pacing back and forth on the other
side of those crates. Go take
a look.

|
SoF Review @ The Oxygen
Tank 4/8/00
12:43 PST | Daravon Ben
Trook over at The Oxygen
Tank, has just informed us about another SoF review.
95% can't be wrong. Here's a bit of it.
As far as the overall
value of Soldier of Fortune goes, the single player
missions deliver roughly 30+ hours of gameplay (with
no cheats of course), which is over a buck and half
for each hour you play the game. That probably doesn't
sound that good, but when combined with endless hours
of fast paced multiplayer it's not that bad at all.
And trust me, Raven didn't leave the multiplayer
aspect dry. Although the multiplayer is a bit
unbalanced to me (too many hitscan weapons for the
fast player speed), I did enjoy it. You have about 20
maps to choose from, along with 5 different gameplay
modes: Standard, CTF, Arsenal, and Realistic. Aresenal
has you competing to be the first person to frag
someone with each of the six weapons, and Realistic
takes less damage to kill an opponent. Overall,
Soldier of Fortune gives plenty of bang for your buck.
There you have it, kids. Go check
it out.
|
|
Multiplayer Issues 4/8/00 10:00 PST | Daravon Rick
Johnson of RavenSoft has addressed the problems of
multiplayer, on the official
forums. Here's what he had to say.
If you had extreme
trouble connecting to MP servers (but had no problem
with the demo), it appears that I've corrected the
problem (with the people that have tested it so far).
This will be included in the first patch, sometime
this weekend. There you have it,
kids.

|
SoF Review @
TeleFragged 4/8/00 9:57 PST | Daravon The
guys over at TeleFragged have
put up a review
of SoF. Here's a bit of it.
One question most
people ask is - 'Is it as good as Half-Life?' For
single player I would have to answer would be a
resounding YES! It serves up a deep story, with neat
and well thought through touches along the way. But
what it does offer over Half-Life is - action, with a
capital 'A'. SoF thows it at you by the spade load,
and doesn't ease off at any point. You can feel
yourself psychically ducking down when people are
shooting ten ton of lead at you, and you are running
for cover fumbling for the right weapon. Like
Half-Life, SoF is a like a conglomeration of all the
best scenes for the best action movies around, thrown
into a large cooking pot, with seasoning added by
Raven. Lookin' good. Check
it out.
|
|
SoF Review @
GamersCentral 4/8/00 8:52 PST | Daravon Chaos,
over at GamersCentral,
has put up a review
of SoF. Two thumbs up can't be wrong. Here's a bit of
it.
By hiring in the help
of skilled specialists like John Mullins for in-game
events and the House of Moves for all the motion
capturing instead of trying to figure it out
themselves, Raven Software has once again proven that
they are experienced specialists when it comes to
making computer games. Shooter of the year, Soldier of
Fortune be thy name. Looks good. Check
it out.

3-D Unlimited
Review 4/7/00
21:52 PST | Zool Tired
of reviews yet? Well heres another! 3D
Unlimited has posted their review, scoring SoF a 96%
along with thier Editors choice award! Here's a snippet:
What Raven has done
here is something spectacular: they have taken the
best elements from previous FPS games, and combined
them into one awesome adventure. This game features
awesome weapons from real-life and one or two
fictitious weapons and places them in a real-world
situation, so you don’t have just go around blowing up
anything in sight, it makes you think. If you want a
game with great action, graphics, sound, and just
about anything else you want, Soldier of Fortune is
our pick. I strongly suggest buying Soldier of
Fortune, as you won’t regret it.

SoF Maplists 4/7/00 18:05 PST | Daravon John
Scott over at Raven, has updated his .plan,
about maplists. Here's what he had to say.
A word on maplists in
Sof. The four used in the released version are at -
http://www2.ravensoft.com/users/jscott/sof/ravdm.lst
http://www2.ravensoft.com/users/jscott/sof/ravrl.lst
http://www2.ravensoft.com/users/jscott/sof/ravctf.lst
http://www2.ravensoft.com/users/jscott/sof/ravassn.lst
It should be quite easy to work out
how to create one of your own =)
If you put
them in "user/maplists", then the menus will auto
detect them and make them selectable. The ones in the
user folder will override the ones in the pak
file.
The reason we added a user folder is that
we at Raven use one exe on a network drive, and the
net drive was getting clogged up with everyones
savegames and screenshots. It also means that the base
folder holds nothing but Raven made stuff, making
patching easier. Furthermore, you can set this to
whatever you want on the command line. If there is
anyone else who uses your machine, just setup two
shortcuts like this
sof.exe -user father sof.exe -user
son ...and all settings, savegames and
demos will go to different folders depending on which
shortcut you run. There you have it,
folks.

|
FragMag Stuff 4/7/00 15:48 PST | Daravon We
had this up a month ago or so, but the guys over at FragMag have scored
an interview with John Mullins, this month. So you guys
might want to pick up the magazine. They're also holding
a tournament of 15 minute SoF Demo DMs, with twenty
copies of SoF up for grabs. For more details, go check
out their site, here.

Stomped SoF Review 4/7/00 15:40 PST | Daravon Sean
"Redwood" Martin over at Stomped has put up a
real long review of
SoF. He gives it a 90%, so it's all good. Here's a bit
of it.
So it comes down to
this. Do I recommend getting this game? You bet I do!
If nothing else, for the fun single player movie-style
action. Don't even let the so-so ending disappoint
you, because plenty of great games have not had the
best of endings. It is the rest of the game that you
will remember anyway. I did not run into any bugs to
speak of. I commend Raven/Activision for good testing
and an excellent product. Is it truly ground breaking?
No, but it reaches the goal of what they were shooting
for and is entertaining. That is what it is all
about. Cool. Go check it
out.

SoF Availibility Down
Under 4/7/00

The Casualties 4/6/00 22:47 PST | Daravon Alright,
folks. We found it a lot easier to cram all our creative
content into one section, so it'll be called, The Casualties.
You can find your standard stuff there, like The
Hooded Terrorist, and The
Top Ten. But stick around. We've got a bunch of new
stuff coming soon. How do Flash movies sound? Starring
John Mullins? Good? I think so. :)

3D Map Realm's SoF
Review 4/6/00
16:51 PST | Daravon eXodus,
over at 3DMR,
has informed us about a review
that they have put up, on SoF. Here's a tidbit.
If the gameplay in SoF
is great, then the graphics are unbelievable. I
honestly don't see the Quake 2 engine underneath this
game. The closest (and most welcome) resemblance is in
the way your character moves around.
The
levels themselves will simply blow you away in terms
of variety, craftsmanship and over all looks. Each
level's atmosphere is very different from the previous
level. In the 3 part Kosovo set for example, you feel
like you're in Kosovo the whole time, yet each of the
3 parts is a distinctly different locale with a new
textures set. I think it sounds good,
don't you? Check
it out, baby.

The Gamer's World

GameCenter's SoF
Review 4/6/00
16:04 PST | Daravon Finally,
the folks over at GameCenter have
also put out a review
of SoF. Here's some of it.
Soldier of Fortune
doesn't redefine the action genre, but it's a damn
fine game that first-person shooter fans should
definitely purchase. With its striking visuals,
intense violence, and outstanding single-player
gaming, this game offers one of the best ways to visit
military hot spots without the risk of coming home in
a body bag. Oh, yeah. Go take
a look at it.
|
|
GameSurge SoF
Review 4/6/00
16:01 PST | Daravon The
guys at GameSurge also put
out a review
of SoF. Here's a bit of it.
Soldier of Fortune is
a great game for any fan of the FPS genre. While it
doesn't bring any major new innovations or concepts to
the table, what it does it does well. Gameplay is
fast, furious, and fun, and you will not get bored
quickly. Go check
it out.
|
|
PC Arena SoF Review 4/6/00 15:58 PST | Daravon The
guys over at PC
Arena have pumped out a review
of SoF, and here's what they have to say.
Soldier of Fortune is
one rock solid action game, and one of the best first
person shooters ever. It may not grab a hold of you
like Half Life, but even that comparison isn't fair.
SOF should stand on its own as one of the coolest
action games ever created. I can now relive my days
fantasizing about being a G.I. Joe, or Rambo. It may
be violent, gruesome, a bit slim on the story, and
contain nothing truly original, but it's one hell of a
ride through and through. Booyah! 4.5
out of 5 can't be wrong! Go check it out, here!

|
GA-Source Interview w/Kenn
Hoekstra 4/6/00 15:54 PST | Daravon The
guys over at GS-Source have landed an interview with
Raven's Kenn Hoekstra. They talk about what he would
have liked to add to SoF, among other things. Here's a
bit.
Q: Now that SoF has
been released, were there any features that you wanted
to implement but just didn't have the
time?
A: Weapon mods (silencers, scopes,
tripods etc.) would have been cool to add. Level of
detail and Skeletal were also high on our list. I also
would have liked to see co-op support, but the nature
of our story and the number of scripted sequences in
the game would have made co-op impossible to
adequately QA. You can never do "everything" you want
to do in a game, but these are a few that I would have
liked to have seen... *cough* SoF2
*cough*
|
|
SoF Awards 4/5/00 19:03 PST | Daravon I
never noticed this until now, but in Kenn Hoekstra's .plan,
it makes mention of a bunch of awards that SoF has won.
Personally, I think that Damage Gaming award looks kind
of freaky. You can go check them out, here.
|
|
Soldieroffortune.net 4/5/00 18:11 PST | Daravon Alright,
folks. After a brief hiatus, Soldieroffortune.net
is back online, with a new, badass design and layout!
Pretty schnazzy. Go check them
out.
Thanks goes out to StarMon2000, for the
heads up.

MadLanGamers LAN Party w/Keith

Raven programmer Keith Fuller. He will be signing
Soldier of Fortune copies and materials and answering
any questions people have about the game. Go there, for
details.

the first. My apologies go out to Juan Golbez of GSI.
Anyway, you can catch the full review, here.

SoF Patch Info 4/5/00 15:26 PST | Zool Over
at the offical SoF forum, Rick Johnson smacked up a
post about the first patch they're working on. Here's
what the patch will straighten up:
WSAECONNRESET when browsing for servers
W2K and game not initializing (i.e. needing
non-admin privledges)
Server stability (fixes 2 DM crashes)
EAX crash bug
Other minor issues The patch
should be available this weekend. He also mentions a
second patch in the near future which makes way for a
"pure server". They will also release the source code!

German Review 4/5/00 14:46 PST | Wampey Pcplayer.de has put a review up this
time in German. Again, I can't read German, so I can't
tell you much about it. They gave it a 80% rating
though. That's not bad. You can check it out here.

Belgian SoF Review 4/5/00 14:41 PST | Wampey One
of Belgiums biggest gaming sites, The
Gaming Shrimp (I think), has posted their thoughts
about SoF in Dutch. I'd say it was a good read, but I
don't know Dutch =). They did give it a 88 of out 100,
though! You can see the review here.

Another Review 4/5/00 12:34 PST | Wampey Game-Revolution has put up it's thoughts
on SoF. In some ways, I wonder about the statements it
makes (Comparing it to Half-Life), but it is a good
read. You can read it here. Here's a clip:
While it really is
just a lot of shooting in a variety of environments
with a variety of unique set-ups, it's fun. This is
Saving Private Ryan's D-Day scene without feeling
sorry for anyone. All around good graphics and sound,
excellent architecture and art direction, and
omnipresent believability combine to create a totally
satisfying, if somewhat brief single player
experience. l Thanks goes to the
folks at S-o-F.com for the heads up!

Review @
Well-Rounded.com 4/5/00 12:30 PST | Wampey Well
Rounded has posted its thoughts of Soldier of
Fortune. Though it doesn't give any rating that I can
see, here is their conclusion statement:
Overall, Soldier of
Fortune is an exciting and stable first-person
shooter, with fast-paced gameplay, an engrossing
storyline, and enough guns, guts and testosterone to
please any hard-core action fan. Grab this one quick!
You can check it out here. And if you don't have the game,
grab it quick!
