Fred Gray might not be the best known musician on the '64, but he did take a bit of the
workload off Martin Galway at Ocean and so did a few memorable soundtracks, Mutants being
one of them. The surreal game needed a determined brooding tune to set the scene for a
heart stopping game through mutant hordes, and this main theme is just that. The ethereal
start gives way here to a slightly heightened tense theme with the emphasis on suspense
clear for all to see. The slightly off key wibbled notes are there, I feel, simply for
atmospheric purposes to make you feel like your communication with the world in the ship
of this game is breaking down - very nicely done.

Here we present a 30-second clip from the CD version of Mutants. What an
organic game this was! I love the amoeba effect. This version sounds more
"Oldfield" than the original SID, thanks to a drum track kicking in halfway
through. Thanks Fred! And now we've added the "Director's Cut": this is a full
length Mutants that didn't make the CD: the reason? It just didn't sound smooth enough, or
professional enough, though it is truer to the actual tune. Also, there is no progression
during the second half of the tune in this version. As Fred said, "something needs to
happen". So, on the CD version, something did!!
