Season One
Episode One
T H E T R U T H I S O U T T H E R E
<- FOREST ->
(A girl is running through the forest in her nighttdress, fighting passed the branches of trees. She stumbles and falls to the ground. She looks up at the trees, a light begins to shine and a figure emerges at the top of a hill. The figure walks towards the girl. Leaves fly in a circle around the girl and as the figure stands over her, the light brightens and the whole scene goes white)
(The girl is lying face down on the ground)
<- COLLUM NATIONAL FOREST, NORTHWEST OREGON ->
[ JOHN TRUITT ]
I put the time of death between eight and twelve hours ago. No visible cause, no sign of battery or sexual assault. All we have is this.
(John lifts up the nightdress to reveal two small marks on her lower back)
(The detective examines the marks)
[ DETECTIVE MILES ]
Can we turn her over?
(He looks at the girl's face and stands up)
Karen Swenson.
[ ASSISTANT CORONER ]
Is that a positive id?
[ DETECTIVE MILES ]
She went to school with my son.
(Detective Miles walks away)
[ JOHN TRUITT ]
Would that be the class of 89 detective? It's happening again isn't it?
<- FBI HEADQUARTERS, WASHINGTON, D.C. ->
(Outside view of the FBI Headquarters. Inside view, we watch as a woman walks up some stairs, across the hallway and to a reception desk)
[ SCULLY ]
Agent Dana Scully.
(Scully then walks through a busy office filled with FBI agents. Next she walks along a corridor and knocks on one of the doors)
[ SECTION CHIEF SCOTT BLEVINS ]
Come in.
(Scully enters and we see a man, Blevins, sitting behind a desk)
Agent Scully, thank you for coming on such short notice, please.
(Blevins indicates for Scully to sit. We see another man standing in the corner of the office smoking, he moves to stand in a corner to the left of Blevins)
We see you've been with us just over two years.
(There is another man sitting to the right of Blevins)
[ SCULLY ]
Yes sir.
[ SECTION CHIEF SCOTT BLEVINS ]
You went to medical school but you chose not to practice. How'd you come to work for the FBI?
[ SCULLY ]
Well sir, I was recruited out of medical school. Em, my parents still think it was an act of rebellion but er, I saw the FBI as a place where I could distinguish myself.
[ THIRD MAN ]
Are you familiar with an agent named Fox Mulder?
[ SCULLY ]
Yes I am.
[ THIRD MAN ]
How so?
[ SCULLY ]
By reputation. Erm, he's an Oxford educated Psychologist, who wrote a monograph on serial killers and the occult, that helped to catch Monty Props in 1988. Generally thought of as the best analyst in the violent crimes section. He had a nickname at the academy, ...Spooky Mulder.
(Scully smiles at the smoking man as she says the nickname but she gets no reaction from him)
[ SECTION CHIEF SCOTT BLEVINS ]
What I'll also tell you is that Agent Mulder has developed a consuming devotion to an unassigned project outside the bureau mainstream. Are you familiar with the so-called X-Files?
[ SCULLY ]
I believe they have to do with unexplained phenomena.
[ SECTION CHIEF SCOTT BLEVINS ]
More or less. The reason you're here Agent Scully is we want you to assist Mulder on these X-files. You'll write field reports on your activites, along with your observations on the validity of the work.
[ SCULLY ]
Am I to understand that you want me to debunk the X-Files project, sir?
[ SECTION CHIEF SCOTT BLEVINS ]
Agent Scully, we trust you'll make the proper scientific analysis. You'll want to contact Agent Mulder shortly, we look forward to seeing your reports.
<- FBI HEADQUARTERS, WASHINGTON, D.C. ->
(Scully walks from a lift and down a small corridor and knocks on a door)
[ MULDER ]
Sorry, nobody down here but the FBI's most unwanted.
(Scully enters the office and sees Agent Mulder sitting at a desk with a desktop light box upon which he is looking at slides)
[ SCULLY ]
Agent Mulder. I'm Dana Scully, I've been assigned to work with you.
(Scully walks forward and shakes Mulder's hand)
[ MULDER ]
Oh isn't it nice to be suddenly so highly regarded. So who did you tick off to get stuck with this details, Scully?
[ SCULLY ]
Actually, I'm looking forward to working with you. I heard alot about you.
[ MULDER ]
Oh really. I was under the impression.. that you were sent to spy on me.
(Mulder is loading a slide cannister)
[ SCULLY ]
If you have any doubt about my qualifications or credentials th...
[ MULDER ]
You're a medical doctor, you teach at the academy,
(Mulder looks for and takes out a folder from one on the trays on the desk)
you did your undergraduate degree in physics, "Einstein's twin paradox - A new interpretation" Dana Scully senior thesis. Now that's a credential, rewriting Einstein.
[ SCULLY ]
Did you bother to read it?
(Mulder then puts the slide cannister onto a projector)
[ MULDER ]
I did. I liked it. It's just that in most of my work, the laws of physics rarely seems to apply.
(Mulder turns out the lights)
Maybe I can get your medical opinion on this though.
(Mulder turns on the projector and a slide of the girl from the start of the episode is projected onto a screen)
Oregon female, aged 21, no explainable cause of death, autopsy shows nothing, zip.
(Next slide shows the two marks found on the girl's back)
There are, however, these two distinct marks on her lower back. Doctor Scully, can you id these marks?
(Scully walks closer to the screen to get a closer look)
[ SCULLY ]
Needle punctures, maybe. An animal bite, electrocution of some kind.
(Next slide shows a breakdown of a chemical compound)
[ MULDER ]
How's your chemistry? This is the substance found in the surrounding tissue.
[ SCULLY ]
It's organic. I don't know, is it some kind of synthetic protein?
[ MULDER ]
Beats me, I've never seen it before either.
(Mulder shows a slide of another body with the marks)
But here it is again in Sturges, South Dakota.
(And another one)
And again in Shamrock, Texas.
[ SCULLY ]
Do you have a theory?
[ MULDER ]
I have plenty of theories. Maybe what you can explain to me why it's bureau policy to label these cases as unexplained phenomenon and ignore them. Do you believe in the existence of extra terrestrials?
[ SCULLY ]
Logically, I would have to say no, given the distances needed to travel from the far reaches of space, the energy requirements would exceed a spacecraft's capabilties th..
[ MULDER ]
Coventional wisdom, do you know this Oregon female. She's the fourth person in her graduating class to die under mysterious circumstances. Now when convention and science offer us no answers, might we not finally turn to the fantastic as a plausibility?
[ SCULLY ]
The girl obviously died of something. If it was natural causes, it's plausible that there was something missed in the post-mortem. If she was murdered, it's plausible there was a sloppy investigation. What I find fantastic is any notion that there are answers beyond the realm of science. The answers are there. You just have to know where to look.
[ MULDER ]
That's why they put the I in FBI.
(Mulder walks to another desk and sits down at a computer)
See you tomorrow morning Scully, bright and early. We leave for the very plausible state of Oregon at 8 a.m.
<- FLYING TO OREGON ->
(Mulder is laying across a couple of seats, eyes closed and with earphones in. Scully is reading through the file on this case)
[ PILOT ]
I would like to ask all passengers to fasten their seatbelts, as we're about to make our descent...
(The plane suddenly hits an air pocket and the plane drops, bags drop out of overhead luggage compartments, the passengers panic, screams are heard. Scully grasps the arms of her seat, Mulder is unaffected by the experience and remains completely calm and without moving a muscle)
(Mulder turns to face Scully)
[ MULDER ]
This must be the place.
<- IN CAR ->
(Mulder and Scully are travelling through Bellefleur, 10 miles outside Oregon)
[ SCULLY ]
You didn't mention yesterday, this case has already been investigated.
[ MULDER ]
Yeah, the FBI got involved after the first three deaths when local authorities failed to turn up any evidence. Our boys came out here, spent a week, enjoyed the local salmon. Which with a little lemon twist is just to die for, if you'll pardon the expression. Without explaination they were called back in, the case was reclassified and buried in the X-files, until I dug it up last week.
[ SCULLY ]
And you found something they didn't.
[ MULDER ]
Ooh.
[ SCULLY ]
The autopsy reports of the first three victims, show no unidentified marks or tissue samples. But those reports were signed by a different medical examiner than the latest victim.
[ MULDER ]
It's pretty good Scully.
[ SCULLY ]
Better than you expected or better that you hoped?
[ MULDER ]
Well, I'll let you know when we get passed the easy part.
(Scully laughs)
[ SCULLY ]
Is the medical examiner a suspect?
[ MULDER ]
We won't know that until we do a little gravedigging. I've arranged to exume one of the other victim's bodies to see if we can get a tissue sample to match the girl's. You're not squeamish about that kind of thing, are ya?
[ SCULLY ]
I don't know. I've never had the pleasure.
(The radio suddenly comes on and tunes itself to different stations, then the clock starts jumping to different times. The radio, which is now untuned starts to get louder)
What's going on?
(The radio comtinues to get louder and Scully puts her fingers in her ears. Mulder stops the car and turns off the engine. He then gets out of the car, followed by Scully, and goes to the boot. After moving a suitcase, Mulder takes out an aerosol can. He then walks a couple of yards back along the road and sprays a large X on it)
What the hell was that about?
[ MULDER ]
Aar, you know, probably nothing.
(Mulder then gets back into the car)
<- COASTAL NORTHWEST OREGON, MARCH 7, 1992 ->
(Mulder and Scully travel through the town to the graveyard, a tractor is at one of the graves. As they arrive two men come down from the grave to meet them)
[ JOHN TRUITT ]
Mr. Mulder, John Truitt County Coroner's Office.
[ MULDER ]
Yeah, hi.
(Mulder and Truitt shake hands)
This is Agent Scully.
[ SCULLY ]
Hi.
(Scully shakes hands with Truitt and the assistant coroner)
[ MULDER ]
How soon can we get started?
[ SCULLY ]
Hello.
[ JOHN TRUITT ]
We're ready to go.
[ MULDER ]
Oh great.
(They all walk up to the grave)
[ JOHN TRUITT ]
K, Vinnie.
[ MULDER ]
Were you able to arrange for a er, an examination facility?
[ JOHN TRUITT ]
I think we got something for ye.
[ MULDER ]
Owh!
[ DR. JAY NEMMAN ]
'scuse me.
(A man pulls up in his car and gets out, followed by a young girl, the others stop and wait dor the man)
Excuse me.
No.
(The man stops the girl from coming with him and puts her back in the car)
Please, just let me handle this, please, stay here. Theresa, I just want to talk to them.
(He then walks up to the others)
I just don't know who you people think you are. You just think you can come up here, and do whatever you damn well please, don't ye?
[ MULDER ]
I'm sorry, you are?
[ DR. JAY NEMMAN ]
I'm Doctor Jay Nemman. I'm county medical examiner.
[ MULDER ]
Surely, you must have been informed of our intentions to come up here.
[ DR. JAY NEMMAN ]
No, er, no. We've been away.
[ MULDER ]
Ooh, oh. Well that answers the question that we had, why you hadn't done the recent autopsy on Karen Swenson. You're aware of the tissue sample that was taken from the girl's body.
(Theresa gets out of the car but stays beside it)
[ DR. JAY NEMMAN ]
Wha.. Wha.. What is the insinuation here? Are you saying that I missed something in those other kids' examines?
[ SCULLY ]
We're not insinuating anything, sir.
(They continue to walk to the grave)
[ DR. JAY NEMMAN ]
Wait a minute,
(Nemman grabs Mulder's arm and turns him round)
wait a minute, see, well I think you are. And if you're making an accusation then you'd better have something to back it up.
[ THERESA NEMMAN ]
Daddy, please, let's just go home. Let's go home, please.
(Nemman, leaves and the rest of them go up to the grave)
[ MULDER ]
Guy obviously needed a longer vacation.
(The tractor is digging up the grave, Scully is studying the case file)
[ SCULLY ]
Ray Sombes was the third victim, after graduating high school, he spent time in a state mental hospital treated for post-adolescent schizophrenia.
[ MULDER ]
Sombes actually confessed to the first two murders. He pleaded to be locked up but he couldn't produce any evidence that he committed the crimes. Did you happen to read the cause of death?
[ SCULLY ]
Exposure. His body was found in the woods after escaping the hospital.
[ MULDER ]
Missing for only seven hours in July. How does a twenty year old boy die of exposure on a warm summers night in Oregon, Doctor Scully?
(The coffin is being lifted out of the grave by a harness attached to the tractor)
[ WORKER ]
I got it.
(As the coffin is lifted out of the grave and onto the ground, one of the straps on the harness snaps)
Look out.
(The coffin falls and tumbles down the hill, it stops when it hits the back of a tombstone but the lid has been knocked ajar. Everyone rushes down to the coffin. Mulder is going to look inside the coffin)
[ JOHN TRUITT ]
This isn't official procedure.
[ MULDER ]
Really.
(After opening the coffin, they are forced to look away at first and cover their nsoes. What they see is a small rotting corpse which does not look like the body of a young man)
It's probably a safe bet Ray Sombes never made the varsity basketball team. Seal this up, right now. Nobody sees or touches this, nobody.
<- LABORATORY, 10:56 p.m. ->
(The body is lying on a medical table while Scully performs an autopsy on it. Mulder is taking pictures to document the body)
[ MULDER ]
This is amazing Scully. You know what this could mean? It's almost too big to even comprehend.
[ SCULLY ]
Subject is a hundred and fifty-six centimetres in length, weighing fifty-two pounds in extremist. Corpse is in advance stages of decay and desiccation. Distinguishing features include large ocular cavities, oblate cranium, indicates subject is not human.
Could you point that flash away from me, please.
[ MULDER ]
If it's not human, what is it?
[ SCULLY ]
It's phemalean, my guess is it's a chimpanzee or something from the ape family, possibly an orang-utan.
[ MULDER ]
Buried in the city cemetery. In Ray Sombes' grave. Try telling that to the good town's folk or to Ray Sombes' family. I want tissue samples and x-rays, I'd like blood type and toxicology and a full genetic work-up.
[ SCULLY ]
You're serious?
[ MULDER ]
What we can't do here, we'll order to go.
[ SCULLY ]
You don't honestly believe this is some kind of an extra terrestrial. This is somebody's sick joke.
[ MULDER ]
We can do those x-rays here, can't we? Is there any reason we can't do them right now? I'm not crazy Scully, I have the same doubts you do.
<- MOTEL, 4:37 a.m. ->
(Scully is in her motel room, typing up her field report from an audio recording of her autopsy)
[ MICROCASSETTE RECORDER ]
Official laboratory inspection of the body and x-ray analysis comfirms a molecus and possibly mutated phemalean physiology. However, does not account for small unidentified object found in subject's nasal cavity. A grey metallic implant form...
(Scully stops the tape recorder and picks up the object, contained in a small glass vial. There is a knock at the door)
Who is it?
[ MULDER ]
Steven Spielberg.
(Scully smiles and answers the door)
I'm way too wired. I'm going for a run, you wanna come?
[ SCULLY ]
Pass.
[ MULDER ]
You figure out what that little thing up Ray Sombes' nose is yet?
(Scully yawns)
[ SCULLY ]
No. And I'm not losing any sleep over it. Goodnight.
(Scully closes the door, she goes back and looks at the x-rays of the body's head, which had a circle around the object lodged in the nasal cavity)
<- RAYMON COUNTY STATE PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITAL ->
(Mulder, Scully and a doctor are walking in the hospital grounds)
[ DR. GLASS ]
Ray Sombes was a patient of mine, yes. I oversaw his treatment for just over a year, for clinical schizophrenia. Ray had an inability to grasp reality. He seemed to suffer from some kind of post-traumatic stress.
[ MULDER ]
Is that something you've seen before?
[ DR. GLASS ]
I've treated similar cases.
[ SCULLY ]
Were any of those Ray Sombes' classmates?
[ DR. GLASS ]
Yes.
[ MULDER ]
We're trying to find a connection in these deaths. Did you treat any of these kids with hypnosis?
[ DR. GLASS ]
No, I did not.
[ SCULLY ]
Are you treating any of these kids now?
[ DR. GLASS ]
Currently? Yes, I'm treating Billy Miles and Peggy O'Dell. Both have been long term live-in patients.
(They all stop walking)
[ SCULLY ]
They're here at this hospital?
[ DR. GLASS ]
That's right, going on four years now.
[ SCULLY ]
Would it be possible for us to talk to them?
[ DR. GLASS ]
Well, you might find it difficult. Certainly, in Billy Miles' case.
<- INSIDE THE HOSPITAL ->
(They walk towards a bed with Billy in, Peggy is in a wheelchair beside the bed reading)
[ DR. GLASS ]
Billy's experiencing what we call a waking coma. Functionally, his brain-waves are flat and he's persistent vegetative.
[ SCULLY ]
How did it happen?
[ DR. GLASS ]
Both he and Peggy were involved in an automobile accident out on State road.
Peggy, Peggy we have some visitors, would you like to talk with them for a moment?
[ PEGGY O'DELL ]
Billy wants me to read now. ... it's not sand, it's dark ...
(Mulder crouches down in front of Peggy)
[ MULDER ]
Does he like it when you read to him?
[ PEGGY O'DELL ]
Yes. Billy needs me close.
[ MULDER ]
Doctor.
(Mulder walks away from Peggy with the doctor)
I'm wondering if we can do a cursory medical exam on Peggy.
(Peggy throws her book on the floor and knocks over a bed stand. She then wheels herself to the end of the bed)
[ NURSE ]
Peggy, oh Peggy, what are you doing?
(As the nurse, Dr. Glass and Mulder go to help Peggy, her nose starts to bleed and she starts screaming)
[ DR. GLASS ]
Get an orderly.
[ MULDER ]
No one is going to hurt you.
[ DR. GLASS ]
This is an emergency.
(Peggy falls out of her chair and onto the floor)
Get an orderly, get an orderly.
(Mulder lifts Peggy's top up to reveal two small marks on her lower back)
Nobody is going to hurt you. The nurse is here.
[ NURSE ]
I'm ringing for the orderlies now.
[ PEGGY O'DELL ]
STOPPIT. Stop.
[ DR. GLASS ]
Alright, Peggy. Alright. It's alright.
[ NURSE ]
Peggy, honey, you're going to be fine, you've had these nose bleedings, now calm down.
(Scully walks out)
<- OUTSIDE HOSPITAL ->
(Mulder leaves the hospital and catches up with Scully as she goes down the entrance steps)
[ MULDER ]
Whatsisname, er, Billy, said he was sorry he didn't get to say goodbye.
[ SCULLY ]
How did you know that girl was going to have the marks?
[ MULDER ]
I don't know, lucky guess.
[ SCULLY ]
Dammit Mulder, cut the crap. What is going on here? What do you know about those marks? What are they?
[ MULDER ]
Why? So you can put it down in your little report. I don't think you're ready for what I think.
[ SCULLY ]
I'm here to solve this case Mulder, I want the truth.
[ MULDER ]
The truth. I think those kids have been abducted.
[ SCULLY ]
By who?
[ MULDER ]
By what?
[ SCULLY ]
You don't really believe that?
[ MULDER ]
Do you have a better explaination?
[ SCULLY ]
I'll buy that girl is suffering some kind of pronounced psychosis whether it's organic or the result of those marks, I can't say. But to say that they've been riding around in flying saucers, it's crazy Mulder, there is nothing to support that.
[ MULDER ]
Nothing scientific you mean.
[ SCULLY ]
There has got to be an explaination. You've got four victims, all of them died in or near the woods. They found Karen Swenson's body in the forest in her pyjamas, ten miles from her house. How did she get there? What were those kids doing out there in the forest?
<- COLLUM NATIONAL FOREST, NORTHWEST OREGON ->
(Mulder and Scully are looking around in the forest, at night. They split up. Mulder checks his compass, the needle rotates a full 360 degrees. Scully takes a handful of soil, from the ground, that she doesn't recognize. She then hears a noise)
[ SCULLY ]
Mulder?
(She takes out her gun, and goes towards the sound. At the top of a hill she sees a light)
Mulder, is that you?
Mulder?
(A figure appears in the light, after a moment the figure holds up a rifle. Scully points her gun at the figure)
Special Agent Dana Scully, FBI, drop your weapon.
[ DETECTIVE MILES ]
I'm with the County Sheriff's Department. You're trespassing on private property here.
[ SCULLY ]
We are conducting an investigation.
(Mulder comes running to the scene)
[ DETECTIVE MILES ]
Get in your car and leave, both of ye, or I have to arrest ye. I don't care who you are.
[ MULDER ]
Hold on. This is a crime scene.
[ DETECTIVE MILES ]
Did you hear what I said? You are on private property, without legal permission. Now I'm only going to say it one more time, get in your car and leave.
(After a moments hesitation, Mulder and Scully lower their guns and leave the forest. They get in their car and head back to their motel)
<- TRAVELLING BACK TO TOWN ->
[ MULDER ]
What's he doing out here all by himself?
[ SCULLY ]
Maybe, it has something to do with this.
(Scully takes out the soil sample and shows it to Mulder)
What do you think it is?
(Mulder looks at it, and then turns on the overhead light to see it better)
[ MULDER ]
I don't know. Is it a campfire?
[ SCULLY ]
It was all over the ground. I think something is going on out here, some kind of a sacrifice maybe. What if these kids are involved in some kind of occult and that man knows something about it.
(Mulder takes out his compass and checks it again, the needle still doesn't fix on north)
I wanna come back here.
(Mulder looks at his watch and again at the compass)
You ok Mulder?
(Mulder looks out of the windows)
[ MULDER ]
Yeah, I'm just er..
[ SCULLY ]
What are you looking for?
(A bright light sudden covers the car, both Mulder and Scully try to avert their eyes from it. The car goes dead and comes to a standstill)
What happened?
(Mulder tries to start the car)
[ MULDER ]
We lost power, brakes, steering, everything.
(Mulder looks at his watch)
We lost nine minutes.
(Mulder gets out of the car)
Waaaooo!
(Scully gets out of the car)
[ SCULLY ]
We lost what?
(She has to shout because it is raining hard)
[ MULDER ]
Nine minutes. I looked at my watch just before the flash and it was nine-o-three. It just turned nine-thirteen.
(Mulder walks along the road in front of the car and discovers the x he sprayed on the road a few days earlier)
Look! Look! Ohoo, yes. Abductees, people who have made UFO sightings, they have reported unexplained time loss.
[ SCULLY ]
Come on.
[ MULDER ]
GONE. Just like that.
[ SCULLY ]
No, what a minute. You're saying that, that time disappeared. Time can't just disappear, it's, it's, it's a universal imvariance.
(The car's engine restarts and the headlights come on)
[ MULDER ]
Not in this zipcode.
(Mulder and Scully get back in the car)
<- SCULLY'S MOTEL ROOM ->
(Scully types more of her report:
{ Agent Mulder's insistence of time loss, due to unknown forces cannot be validated or substantiated by this witness }
suddenly the power goes out)
[ SCULLY ]
Great.
(Scully lights a candle, goes into the bathroom and turns on the shower. As she removes her bathrobe, and goes to remove her pants, she feels something on her lower back with her hand. She looks at what she feels then turns to see what it is in the mirror)
(Mulder opens his door, candle in hand, and Scully is standing there)
[ MULDER ]
Hi.
[ SCULLY ]
I want you to look at something.
[ MULDER ]
Come on in.
(Scully enters and removes her bathrobe to reveal the small marks on her lower back. Mulder takes a closer look)
[ SCULLY ]
What are they? Mulder, what are they?
(Scully is frightened at what the marks might be. Mulder starts to smile)
[ MULDER ]
Mosquito bites.
[ SCULLY ]
Are you sure?
[ MULDER ]
Yeah. I got eaten up alot myself out there.
(Scully pulls her robe back on and turns to hold Mulder)
You ok?
[ SCULLY ]
Yes.
(Scully lets go of Mulder and straightens her robe)
[ MULDER ]
You're shaking.
[ SCULLY ]
I need to sit down.
[ MULDER ]
Take your time.
(Some time passes. Scully is lying on the bed with a blanket over her, Mulder is sitting on the floor)
I was twelve when it happened, my sister was eight. She just disappeared out of her bed one night. Just gone, vanished, no note, no phone calls, no evidence of anything.
[ SCULLY ]
You never found her.
[ MULDER ]
Tore the family apart. No one would talk about it. They were no facts to confirm, nothing, to offer any hope.
[ SCULLY ]
What did you do.
[ MULDER ]
Eventually, I went off to school in England, I came back, got recruited by the bureau. Seems I had a natural aptitude for applying behavioural models to criminal cases.
(A figure moves through the bushes outside the motel)
My success allowed me a certain freedom to pursue my own interests. And that's when I came across the X-Files.
[ SCULLY ]
By accident.
[ MULDER ]
At first, it looked like a garbage dump for UFO sightings, alien abduction reports, the kind of stuff that most people laugh at as being ridiculous. But I was fascinated. I read all the cases I could get my hands on, hundreds of them. I read everything I could about paranormal phenomenon, about the occult and...
[ SCULLY ]
What?
[ MULDER ]
There's classified government information I've being trying to access, but someone has been blocking my attempts to get at it.
[ SCULLY ]
Who? I don't understand.
[ MULDER ]
Someone at a higher level of power. The only reason I've been allowed to continue with my work is becuase I've made connections in congress.
[ SCULLY ]
And they're afraid of what? That, that you'll leak this information.
[ MULDER ]
You're a part of that agenda, you know that.
[ SCULLY ]
I'm not a part of any agenda. You've got to trust me. I'm here just like you, to solve this.
[ MULDER ]
I'm telling you this Scully because you need to know, because of what you've seen. In my research, I've worked very closely with a man named Dr. Heitz Werber and he's taken me through deep regression hypnosis. I've been able to go into my repressed memories to the night my sister disappeared. I can recall, a bright light, outside, and a presence in the room. I was paralysed, unable to respond to my sister's calls for help.
(Mulder raises his voice to emphasise his point)
Listen to me Scully, this thing exists.
[ SCULLY ]
But how do you kno...
[ MULDER ]
The government knows about it, and I gotta know what they're protecting. Nothing else matters to me, and this is as close as I've ever gotten to it.
(The telephone rings, making Scully jump)
Hello? What? Who is this? Who is thi...
(Mulder hangs up)
That was some women, she just said Peggy O'Dell was dead.
[ SCULLY ]
The girl in the wheelchair?
<- RURAL HWY. 133 BELLEFLEUR, OREGON ->
(A truck is stopped, there are police cars nearby. A patrolman lights up a flare and proceeds to walk down the road. Mulder and Scully arrive in their car)
[ MULDER ]
What happened?
[ TRUCK DRIVER ]
She ran right out in front of me.
[ POLICE OFFICER ]
Who are you?
[ MULDER ]
She was running? On foot?
(Scully looks under the blanket covering Peggy O'Dell. She gives her a cursory look over and notices Peggy's watch stopped at 9:03)
Well, that's just...
Let's go, let's go.
[ SCULLY ]
We need to ask you a few quest...
(Scully tries to ask a police officer some questions but Mulder decides there's no point)
[ MULDER ]
Someone trashed the autopsy bay in the lab and they stole the body, we're going back to the motel.
[ SCULLY ]
What? They stole the corpse?
<- BACK AT THE MOTEL ->
(When they get back to the motel, it is ablaze. Police and firemen surround the area)
[ MULDER ]
FBI.
[ SCULLY ]
They goes my computer.
[ MULDER ]
DAMMIT. The x-rays and pictures.
(After watching the fire for a few moments a girl comes up to Mulder and Scully)
[ THERESA NEMMAN ]
My name is Theresa Nemman, you've got to protect me.
[ MULDER ]
Come with us.
<- IN A RESTAURANT ->
[ THERESA NEMMAN ]
This is the way it happens, I don't know how I get out there. I'll just find myself, out in the woods.
[ MULDER ]
How long has it been happening?
[ THERESA NEMMAN ]
Ever since the summer we graduated. It's happened to my friends too. That's why I need you, to protect me. I'm scared, I might, die, like the others, like, Peggy did tonight.
[ MULDER ]
Your father's the medical examiner, you were the one on the phone, you told me Peggy O'Dell had been killed.
(Theresa nods her head)
[ SCULLY ]
Theresa, your father knows about this doesn't he?
About what happens.
[ THERESA NEMMAN ]
Yes. But he said never to tell anyone about any of it.
[ MULDER ]
Why?
[ THERESA NEMMAN ]
He wants to protect me. He thinks he can protect me, but I don't think he can.
[ MULDER ]
Do you have the marks, Theresa?
[ THERESA NEMMAN ]
Yes. I'm going to die, aren't I? I'm gonna be next?
[ SCULLY ]
No, you're not going to die.
(Theresa's nose starts to bleed)
Oh God!
(Scully rushes to the next table and gets some hand towels. Dr. Nemman and Detective Miles come in)
[ DR. JAY NEMMAN ]
Let's go home, Theresa. Theresa, come on, come on honey.
(Dr. Nemman sits down beside his daughter and takes out his handkerchief to stop Theresa's nose bleeding)
[ MULDER ]
I don't think she wants to leave.
[ DR. JAY NEMMAN ]
I don't care what you think. She's a sick girl.
[ DETECTIVE MILES ]
Your father wants to take you home. He'll get you all cleaned up.
[ DR. JAY NEMMAN ]
I gonna take you where you'll be safe Theresa, Detective Miles and I won't let anything happen to you, I promise.
(Mulder and Scully look at Detective Miles in surprise as they find out who he is)
[ MULDER ]
You're Billy Miles' father?
[ DETECTIVE MILES ]
That's right. And you stay away from that boy.
<- OUTSIDE RESTAURANT ->
(Theresa sits in her dad's car, the window closes and the car drives off)
[ MULDER ]
Ehh! You gotta love this place, everyday's like Hallowe'en.
[ SCULLY ]
They know Mulder. They know who's responsible for the murders.
[ MULDER ]
They know something.
[ SCULLY ]
Dr. Nemman's been hiding medical evidence from the beginning. He lied on the autopsy reports, and then we find out about the detective. Who else would have reason to trash the lab and our rooms?
[ MULDER ]
Why would they destroy evidence? What would they want with that corpse?
[ SCULLY ]
I don't know, I...
[ MULDER ]
Makes you wonder what's in those other two graves.
<- GRAVEYARD ->
(Mulder and Scully arrive at the graveyard, it's dark and raining. They go the the other two graves, both graves have been dug up)
[ MULDER ]
They're both empty.
[ SCULLY ]
What is going on here?
[ MULDER ]
I think I know who did it. I think I know who killed Karen Swenson.
[ SCULLY ]
Who? The detective?
[ MULDER ]
The detective's son, Billy Miles.
[ SCULLY ]
The boy in the hospital, the vegetable.
<- 5:07 a.m. ->
Billy Miles, a boy who's been in a coma for the last four years, got out here and dug up these graves.
[ MULDER ]
Peggy O'Dell was bound to a wheelchair but she ran in front of that truck. Look, I'm not making this up, it all fits the profile of alien abduction.
[ SCULLY ]
This fits a profile?
[ MULDER ]
Yes. Peggy O'Dell was killed at around nine-o-clock, that's right around the time we lost nine minutes on the highway, I think that something happened in that nine minutes. I think that time as we know it, stopped. And something took control over it. You think I'm crazy.
(Mulder walks away from Scully, stops, turns around and looks at Scully again, seeing her expression)
What?
[ SCULLY ]
Peggy O'Dell's watch stopped a couple of minutes after nine, I made a note of it when I saw the body.
[ MULDER ]
That's the reason, the kids come to the forest, because the forest controls them and summons them there. An, an, and the marks, are from, from some kind of test that's being done on them. And, and that may be causing some kind of genetic mutation which would explain the body that we dug up.
[ SCULLY ]
And the force summoned Theresa Nemman's body, into the woods tonight.
[ MULDER ]
Yes, but it was Billy Miles, who took her there, summoned by some alien impulse, that's it.
(Scully laughs unbelievably about their theory)
Come on, let's get out of here.
[ SCULLY ]
Where are we going?
[ MULDER ]
We're going to pay a visit to Billy Miles.
<- RAYMON COUNTY STATE PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITAL ->
(Scully examines Billy Miles)
[ NURSE ]
Now, we could stand here until the second coming, waiting for Billy to get out of this bed, it ain't gonna happen. He blinks, and I know about it.
[ MULDER ]
I guess you changed his bedpan last night.
[ NURSE ]
Hmph, nobody else here's gonna do it.
[ MULDER ]
You noticed nothing unusual?
Do you remember what you were doing last night around nine-o-clock?
[ NURSE ]
Mmm, probably, watching tv, yeah.
[ MULDER ]
Do you rememeber what you were watching?
(Scully moves to the end of the bed and lifts the covers up over Billy's feet)
[ NURSE ]
Erm, let's see, you know I don't really remember what I watched.
(The nurse notices what Scully is doing)
Miss?
(Scully takes a closer look at Billy's feet)
What is she looking for?
[ SCULLY ]
Mulder, take a look at this.
(Mulder takes a look at Billy's feet. Scully takes some samples of dirt from Billy's feet)
[ MULDER ]
Do you know who was taking care of Peggy O'Dell last night?
[ NURSE ]
Not me, it's not my ward. Not my aisle of the proto-section.
(The nurse gently laughs causing Mulder to laugh gently also)
I do have a job of my own to do, what is she doing now?
[ MULDER ]
Thank you for your time, ma'am.
[ NURSE ]
OK.
[ MULDER ]
Good day.
(Mulder and Scully leave and the nurse fixes the covers at Billy's feet)
<- LEAVING WARD ->
(Mulder and Scully walk down the hospital corridor)
[ SCULLY ]
That kid may have killed Peggy O'Dell, I don't believe this.
[ MULDER ]
Scully.
[ SCULLY ]
It's crazy. He was in the woods.
[ MULDER ]
You're sure?
[ SCULLY ]
This is the same stuff that I took a handful of in the forest.
[ MULDER ]
OK, then maybe we should take it and run a lab test...
[ SCULLY ]
We lost the original sample in the fire, what else could it be?
(They stop and face each other)
[ MULDER ]
Alright, but I just want you to undersatand what it is you're saying.
[ SCULLY ]
You said it yourself.
[ MULDER ]
Yeah, but you have to write it down in your report.
[ SCULLY ]
You're right. We'll take another sample from the forest, and run a comparison before we do anything.
<- COLLUM NATIONAL FOREST, NORTHWEST OREGON ->
[ SCULLY ]
The detective's here.
(Mulder and Scully, get out of their car. Mulder shines his flashlight in the detective's car window)
What do you think?
(We hear the sound of a girl screaming. Mulder and Scully go running through the forest. Mulder runs on ahead of Scully, who gets hit on the head and knocked to the ground. Detective Miles is standing beside her)
[ DETECTIVE MILES ]
You wouldn't listen to me. I told you to stay out of this.
(The detective runs off. Mulder is still running and then he hears more screams. He runs in the direction of the screams and into Detective Miles, who is holding his shotgun pointed at Mulder)
Hold it, hold it right there. You got no business out here.
[ MULDER ]
There were screams.
[ DETECTIVE MILES ]
Down on the ground, NOW.
[ MULDER ]
You know it's Billy. You've known it all along.
[ DETECTIVE MILES ]
I said down on the ground.
(Mulder gets down on his knees)
[ MULDER ]
How long are you gonna let it happen?
(We hear more screams)
He's gonna kill her.
(The detective runs off)
(Theresa is lying unconscious on the ground, Billy lifts her shoulders up, leaves are circling the area. The detective comes running to where Billy is)
[ DETECTIVE MILES ]
BILLY, NO.
(Billy looks at his dad, but does not react)
Let her go, leave her alone.
(The detective raises his shotgun and points it at Billy, Mulder charges in and brings the detective to the ground. The shotgun goes off and Scully, holding her head, runs in the direction of the shot)
(Billy lifts Theresa up in his arms, his back turned to Mulder and his dad. Mulder notices the two small marks on Billy's back. Billy looks up and a light appears, Mulder and the detective look up at it. Scully sees it from afar and stands watching it. The light brightens until it is the only thing that can be seen where Billy was standing. The light fades and Billy is left standing there. Theresa is lying on the ground, her eyes flicker open and she turns onto her side and looks up at Billy. Billy turns and sees his dad)
[ BILLY MILES ]
Dad?
[ DETECTIVE MILES ]
Billy.
(The detective walks forward and hugs his son)
Oh god.
(The detective turns himself and Billy around as they hug, Mulder notices the small marks on billy's back are gone)
[ MULDER ]
Scully.
(Mulder looks around for his flashlight and runs off into the forest. Scully comes running to where she saw the light and meets up with Mulder)
Scully.
[ SCULLY ]
Mulder, what happened, there was a light.
[ MULDER ]
It was incredible.
(Mulder and Scully stand there, in front of one another, gasping at the events that just took place)
<- MARCH 22, 1992 FBI HEADQUARTERS, WASHINGTON, D.C. ->
(Billy is sitting in a room, sitting close to him is a man asking questions. Mulder in also in the room, standing in front of a mirror)
[ DR. HEITZ WERBER ]
If you can hear me, raise your right hand.
(Billy raises his right hand)
Tell me about the light, Billy. When did you first see the light?
[ BILLY MILES ]
In the forest, we were all in the forest having a party. All my friends, we were celebrating.
[ DR. HEITZ WERBER ]
What were you celebrating?
[ BILLY MILES ]
Graduation. And then the light came, it took me away, to the testing place. They would tell me to gather the others, so that they could do tests. They put something in my head,
(Billy touches his forehead)
here.
(Watching the questioning from the other side of the two-way mirror is Scott Blevins, the smoking man, the other man and Scully)
I would wait for their orders.
[ DR. HEITZ WERBER ]
Billy, who gave the orders?
[ BILLY MILES ]
The light. They said it would be ok, no one would know, but the test didn't work. They wanted everything destroyed, they said they were leaving. I'm afraid, I'm afraid they're coming back.
(The smoking man walks over to Blevins and whispers something in his ear)
[ DR. HEITZ WERBER ]
Don't be afraid Billy, we're gonna help.
(Blevins nods his head)
[ SECTION CHIEF SCOTT BLEVINS ]
Alright, let's go.
(As the three men leave, Mulder turns to look in the mirror. Scully looks at Mulder and sees that he is looking directly at her)
<- FBI HEADQUARTERS, WASHINGTON, D.C. ->
(Blevins, the third man and Scully are sitting in Blevins' office)
[ SECTION CHIEF SCOTT BLEVINS ]
What we've just witnessed, what we've read in your field reports, the scientific basis and credibility just seem wholely unsupportable, you're aware of that?
[ SCULLY ]
Mm, yes sir. My reports are personal and subjective, I don't think I've gone so far as to draw any conclusion about what I've seen.
[ THIRD MAN ]
Or haven't seen, as seems to be the case. This, er, time loss, you did or did not experience it?
[ SCULLY ]
I can't substantiate it, no.
[ SECTION CHIEF SCOTT BLEVINS ]
What exactly can you substantiate Agent Scully? I see no evidence that justifies the legitimacy of these investigations.
[ SCULLY ]
There were, of course, crimes committed.
[ SECTION CHIEF SCOTT BLEVINS ]
Yes, but how do you prosecute a case like this? With testimony given under hypnosis from a boy who claims that he was given orders, from some alien force, through an implant, in his nose. You have no physical evidence.
(Scully stands up and takes the glass vial, containing the object taken from Ray Sombes' body, out of her pocket and places it on Blevins' desk)
[ SCULLY ]
This, is the object described by Billy Miles as a communication device. I removed it from the exumed body, I kept it in my pocket, it was the only piece of evidence not destroyed in the fire. I ran a lab test on it, the material could not be identified.
[ SECTION CHIEF SCOTT BLEVINS ]
Agent Mulder, what are his thoughts?
[ SCULLY ]
Agent Mulder believes we are not alone.
[ SECTION CHIEF SCOTT BLEVINS ]
Thank Agent Scully, that will be all.
(Scully leaves Blevins' office and as she walks down the corridor she passes the smoking man. As they pass, Scully stops and watches him enter Blevins' office before continuing down the corridor)
<- SCULLY'S APARTMENT ->
(Scully is lying in bed, awake, the clock says 11:21 p.m., it changes to 11:22 p.m., then the phone rings)
[ SCULLY ]
Hello?
[ MULDER ]
Scully, it's me, I haven't been able to sleep, I talked to the D.A.'s office in Raymon County, Oregon. There's no case file on Billy Miles, the paperwork we filed is gone. We need to talk Scully.
[ SCULLY ]
Y, Yes, tomorrow.
(Scully hangs up the phone and puts her head back on the pillow)
(The smoking man walks down a narrow aisle of shelves, and stops at a particular box. He lifts out a transparent case, and opens it. He reaches inside his jacket and takes out the glass vial containing the communication device described by Billy Miles. He puts it in a compartment in the case. The other compartments look like they contain similar devices. The smoking man closes up the case and puts it back in the box, which is labelled `100041, Evidence'. He then walks down the aisle and out a door. When he closes the door and locks it, he walks away. On the door is a sign which shows us that the room he was in, is a room in the Pentagon)
