Continental shelf in Indian Ocean & South China Sea Another area of easy coastal navigation was the South China Sea. The wide continental shelf connects China, Japan and what were called the "Spice Islands." Today these islands form part of the 700+ island chain called Indonesia.

 

Europe's Continental Shelf

The extent of the Asian continental shelf greatly resembles that of northern Europe. The only major difference is Europe's more northerly location, closer to magnetic north, making the navigational compass less useful.
